Pattern Recognition

Pattern recognition means spotting what repeats or changes by a rule, so we can predict any term without listing them all.

Key ideas

Remember

Constant gap3, 7, 11, 15, … add 4 each time → 19
Growing gaps1, 2, 4, 7, 11, … gaps +1, +2, +3, +4 → 16
k-th item of a block of length Lremainder of k ÷ L gives the place in the block (remainder 0 → last item)
Sticks pattern 5, 8, 11, 14term n = 3 × n + 2
Square and triangular numbers1, 4, 9, 16, 25 and 1, 3, 6, 10, 15
Letter valuesA = 1, B = 2, …, Z = 26; a word’s value is the sum

Watch out

Worked example

(a) A pattern repeats: right, right, down, left, right, right, down, left, right, right, … What is the 54th item?
(b) In a code, CAT is written as DBU. How is DOG written in the same code?

Working: (a) the block of 4 repeats; 54 = 4 × 13 + 2, so it is item 2 of the block; (b) each letter moves 1 place forward in the alphabet (Z goes round to A)

Answer: (a) right; (b) EPH
