Key ideas

Remember

Scalereal length = plan length × scale number
Pie chart anglepart ÷ total × 360°
Inverse proportionx1 × y1 = x2 × y2
Units100 cm = 1 m; 1000 m = 1 km

Watch out

Worked example

A plan of a room has a scale of 1 : 250. On the plan the room is 8 cm by 10 cm. Find its real length, breadth and floor area.

Working: 8 × 250 = 2000 cm; 10 × 250 = 2500 cm

Answer: 20 m by 25 m; 500 m2
