Binary, Data and Logic

Computers store everything as bits. Binary numbers, data sizes, ASCII codes and the logic of AND, OR and NOT are the base of all computing.

Key ideas

Remember

Binary45 = 32 + 8 + 4 + 1 = 1011012
Sizes1 byte = 8 bits; 1 KB = 1,024 bytes; 1 MB = 1,024 KB
Image size100 × 80 pixels × 8 bits ÷ 8 = 8,000 bytes
AND; OR; NOTTrue only if both; True if at least one; flips the value
Order of workbrackets and NOT first, then AND, then OR
Fewest bits for m itemsthe smallest b with 2ᵇ ≥ m: 200 items → 8 bits

Watch out

Worked example

A = True, B = True, C = False. Is (A AND B) OR (NOT C) True or False?

Working: work out the brackets and NOT first, then AND, then OR

Answer: True
