Class 10 Sectors of the Indian Economy: cheat sheet
CBSE Social Science. The primary, secondary and tertiary sectors, GDP and final goods, disguised unemployment, MGNREGA, and organised and unorganised, public and private work.
Key ideas
- Primary activities use natural resources (farming, fishing, mining), secondary activities turn them into goods (manufacturing), and tertiary activities are services (transport, banking, trade).
- GDP is the value of all final goods and services produced in a country in a year; intermediate goods are left out so nothing is counted twice.
- The tertiary sector is now India’s largest producer, but the primary sector still employs the most people.
- Disguised unemployment is when more people work than are needed, so some add nothing to output.
- MGNREGA promises at least 100 days of paid work a year to rural households.
- The organised sector has registered firms, regular jobs and benefits; the unorganised sector has small units with low, insecure pay.
- In the public sector the government owns most assets; in the private sector companies do, mainly for profit.
Remember
| GDP | value of final goods and services produced in a year |
| MGNREGA | 2005; 100 days of work a year |
| Public and private | railways, post office; TISCO, RIL |
| Sectors linked | cotton farm (primary) → mill (secondary) → truck and shop (tertiary) |
| Workers in a sector | share × total workers, e.g. 25% of 8,000 = 2,000 |
Watch out
- Adding intermediate goods to GDP: only final goods count.
- Mixing organised and unorganised (terms of work) with public and private (who owns).
- Assuming the sector that produces most must also employ most.
Worked example
The book’s graph shows the secondary sector’s share of employment as 11% in 1977–78 and 25% in 2017–18. Suppose a district had 8,200 workers then and 11,700 now. How many worked in the secondary sector each time?
Working: 11% of 8,200; 25% of 11,700
Answer: 902 in 1977–78 and 2,925 in 2017–18
