Section A · multiple choice
- 1.
A load of 2100 N hangs from a wire of cross-section 2 mm². The stress in the wire is:
- 1,050 × 10⁶ N/m²
- 1,050 × 10³ N/m²
- 4,200 × 10⁶ N/m²
- 1,050 N/m²
Answer
(a) 1,050 × 10⁶ N/m²
stress = F/A = 2100 ÷ (2 × 10⁻⁶)
- 2.
A glass wire 8 m long, of cross-section 25 mm², carries a load of 3600 N. Its extension is (Y = 65 × 10⁹ N/m²):
- 35.45 mm
- 1.77 mm
- 17.72 mm
- 177.23 mm
Answer
(c) 17.72 mm
ΔL = FL/(AY); with A in mm² and Y in GPa, ΔL comes out in mm
- 3.
A wire 2 m long and 25 mm² in cross-section stretches by 0.76 mm under a load of 1900 N. Its Young's modulus is:
- 2000 × 10⁹ N/m²
- 200 × 10⁶ N/m²
- 20 × 10⁹ N/m²
- 200 × 10⁹ N/m²
Answer
(d) 200 × 10⁹ N/m²
Y = FL/(AΔL)
Section B · short answer
- 4.
A glass wire 8 m long with cross-section 2 mm² supports 3600 N. Find the stress, the strain and the extension. (Y = 65 × 10⁹ N/m²)
Answer
Stress 1,800 × 10⁶ N/m²; strain 0.0277; extension 221.54 mm
strain = stress/Y; ΔL = strain × L
- 5.
In an experiment, a wire 10 m long with cross-section 25 mm² stretches 18.86 mm when 3300 N is hung on it. Find Young's modulus. Which metal could it be?
Answer
70 × 10⁹ N/m²; aluminium
Y = FL/(AΔL)
Section C · long answer
- 6.
Two wires, one iron (Y = 190 GPa) and one steel (Y = 200 GPa), have the same length 4 m and cross-section 10 mm². Each carries 1500 N. (a) Find the stress in each. (b) Find the extensions and their ratio. (c) Which material is more elastic?
Answer
(a) Both 150 × 10⁶ N/m². (b) 3.16 mm and 3 mm, ratio 20 : 19. (c) steel, which has the larger Young's modulus (less strain for the same stress).
