Class 11 Rural Development: cheat sheet
CBSE Social Science. Developing the village economy: rural credit and self-help groups, agricultural marketing, MSP and buffer stocks, diversification into allied work, and organic farming.
Key ideas
- Farmers need credit because income comes only after the harvest; moneylenders charge very high interest, so banks, cooperatives and SHGs matter.
- NABARD (1982) coordinates rural finance; self-help groups pool members’ savings and give small loans without collateral (microcredit).
- Agricultural marketing covers assembling, storing, grading and distributing produce; regulated markets, cooperatives, storage and e-NAM help farmers get fair prices.
- The minimum support price assures farmers a price; FCI keeps buffer stocks of wheat and rice; the PDS distributes food grains.
- Diversification into animal husbandry, fisheries, horticulture and non-farm work spreads risk and adds income.
- Organic farming avoids chemical fertilisers and pesticides, uses cheaper local inputs and gives safe food.
Remember
| SHG savings | members × saving each month × months |
| Simple interest | loan × rate × time ÷ 100 (a monthly rate × 12 for a year) |
| Sale at MSP | (output − kept) × MSP |
| Fish output | inland about 75%, sea about 25% |
| Price with a premium | price × (100 + premium) ÷ 100 |
| Golden Revolution | the rapid growth of horticulture (nearly one-third of farm output value) |
Watch out
- Treating a monthly interest rate as a yearly one: multiply by 12 for a year.
- Forgetting to subtract what the family keeps before selling at MSP.
- Thinking the sea gives most of India’s fish (inland sources give about three-quarters).
Worked example
An SHG of 16 members each saves ₹230 a month for 35 months. It then lends ₹17,000 to one member at 1% a month for 6 months (simple interest). How much did the group save, and what interest does the member pay?
Working: 16 × 230 × 35; 17,000 × 1% × 6
Answer: ₹128,800; ₹1,020
