Class 6 Family and Community: cheat sheet
CBSE Social Science. Joint and nuclear families, what families and communities do for their members, community helpers, and the values of sharing, care and service.
Key ideas
- A joint family has several generations living together; a nuclear family has parents and their children.
- A family cares for and protects its members, shares work and money, and passes on values, stories and traditions.
- A community is a group of people who live in the same area or share interests and help one another.
- Community helpers such as doctors, teachers, postmen and sanitation workers serve everyone.
- Sharing household work is cooperation; caring for elders shows responsibility.
- Communities support their members in hard times, such as floods or storms.
- “Vasudhaiva kutumbakam” teaches us to treat the whole world as one family.
Remember
| Joint family | grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts and children together |
| Nuclear family | parents and their children |
| Community | families in one area sharing common needs |
| Vasudhaiva kutumbakam | the whole world is one family |
| Community kitchen | shows sharing and service |
| Share of an amount | amount ÷ 100 × the number out of every 100 |
Watch out
- Mixing up joint and nuclear families.
- Thinking only paid workers are community helpers: neighbours and volunteers help too.
- Saying household work has no value because it is unpaid.
