Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

    The slope of the line through (−5, 2) and (−4, 9) is:

    1. 1/7
    2. −7
    3. −11/9
    4. 7
    Answer

    (d) 7

    (9 − 2) ÷ (−4 − (−5)) = 7 ÷ 1 = 7

  2. 2.

    P(9, 8) is reflected in the y-axis, then moved 6 units right and 4 units down. It ends at:

    1. (−4, 4)
    2. (−15, 12)
    3. (−3, 4)
    4. (15, 4)
    Answer

    (c) (−3, 4)

    reflection gives (−9, 8); then (−9 + 6, 8 − 4)

  3. 3.

    A line with a negative slope:

    1. is horizontal
    2. is vertical
    3. rises from left to right
    4. falls from left to right
    Answer

    (d) falls from left to right

    the rise is negative for a positive run

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

    Find the equation, in slope-intercept form, of the line through (−5, 5) and (−3, 7). Where does it cut the y-axis?

    Answer

    y = x + 10; at (0, 10)

    m = 2 ÷ 2 = 1; c = 5 − (1) × (−5) = 10

  2. 5.

    Write 4x + 8y − 7 = 0 in slope-intercept form, and give its slope and y-intercept.

    Answer

    y = −(1/2)x + 7/8; slope −1/2, y-intercept 7/8

    8y = −4x + 7, then divide by 8

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

    A line passes through (10, 3). Its x-intercept and y-intercept are both positive and add up to 24. Find all possible equations of the line in intercept form.

    Answer

    x/15 + y/9 = 1 or x/16 + y/8 = 1

    x/a + y/(24 − a) = 1 through (10, 3): a² − 31a + 240 = 0, so a = 15 or 16
