Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

A car travels 160 km in 4 hours. Its average speed is:

    1. 44 km/h
    2. 640 km/h
    3. 80 km/h
    4. 40 km/h
    Answer

    (d) 40 km/h

    160 ÷ 4 = 40

  2. 2.

    A speed of 180 km/h in m/s is:

    1. 50 m/s
    2. 648 m/s
    3. 180 m/s
    4. 55 m/s
    Answer

    (a) 50 m/s

    × 5/18: 180 × 5/18 = 50

  3. 3.

    A body's velocity changes from 7 m/s to 10 m/s in 3 s. Its acceleration is:

    1. 3 m/s²
    2. 2 m/s²
    3. 3.33 m/s²
    4. 1 m/s²
    Answer

    (d) 1 m/s²

    (10 − 7) ÷ 3 = 1

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

A bus travels at 57 km/h for 4 h and then at 35 km/h for 4 h. Find its average speed. (Give the answer to 2 decimal places where needed.)

    Answer

    46 km/h

    total distance 368 km ÷ total time 8 h

  2. 5.

A car moving at 11 m/s is brought to rest in 8 s. Find its acceleration. (Give the answer to 2 decimal places where needed.)

    Answer

    −1.38 m/s²

    a = (0 − 11) ÷ 8; the minus sign means it is slowing down

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

A train starts from rest and accelerates uniformly at 2 m/s² for 6 s. Find its final speed and the distance it covers. (Give the answer to 2 decimal places where needed.)

    Answer

    12 m/s; 36 m

    v = at = 12; s = ½at² = ½ × 2 × 36
