Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

    If p(x) = −6x, then p(2) is:

    1. 12
    2. −4
    3. −13
    4. −12
    Answer

    (d) −12

    −6 × 2 + 0

  2. 2.

    The zero of 9x + 5 is:

    1. −5/9
    2. 5/9
    3. −1 4/5
    4. 5
    Answer

    (a) −5/9

    9x + 5 = 0 → x = −5/9

  3. 3.

    A linear polynomial has degree:

    1. 3
    2. 2
    3. 1
    4. 0
    Answer

    (c) 1

the highest power of x is 1

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

    Find the values of p(x) = −9x + 3 at x = −1, 1, 3. By how much does p(x) change each time x goes up by 1?

    Answer

    12, −6, −24; by −9

    down by 9 each step

  2. 5.

Find the zero of −7x + 11 and check it.

    Answer

    1 4/7

    −7x + 11 = 0 → −7x = −11 → x = 1 4/7

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

Plan A costs Rs 83 plus Rs 8 per hour; plan B costs Rs 66 plus Rs 10 per hour. Write each as a linear polynomial. After how many hours do they cost the same, and which is cheaper for longer use?

    Answer

    A: 83 + 8h; B: 66 + 10h; equal at h = 8 1/2; A is cheaper after that

    83 + 8h = 66 + 10h → 2h = 17
