Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

The sum of the zeroes of the polynomial x² − 8x + 7 is:

    1. 7
    2. −8
    3. 9
    4. 8
    Answer

    (d) 8

    sum of zeroes = −b/a = 8

  2. 2.

The product of the zeroes of the polynomial 4x² − 56x + 180 is:

    1. 180
    2. 14
    3. 45
    4. −45
    Answer

    (c) 45

    product of zeroes = c/a = 45

  3. 3.

The zeroes of the polynomial x² + 4x − 45 are:

    1. −9 and 5
    2. −5 and 9
    3. 5 and 9
    4. −9 and −5
    Answer

    (a) −9 and 5

    x² + 4x − 45 = (x + 9)(x − 5)

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

Find the zeroes of 6y² − 25y + 25 and verify the relationship between the zeroes and the coefficients.

    Answer

    5/3 and 5/2

    6y² − 25y + 25 = (2y − 5)(3y − 5); sum = 25/6 = −b/a, product = 25/6 = c/a

  2. 5.

Find a quadratic polynomial whose zeroes have sum 3/5 and product 1/5.

    Answer

    5x² − 3x + 1 (or any non-zero multiple of it)

    k[x² − (3/5)x + (1/5)]; take k = 5 to clear the fractions

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

A toy rocket is launched straight up from the ground. Its height after t seconds is h(t) = −5t² + 60t metres. Find the zeroes of h(t) and say what they mean.

    Answer

    t = 0 and t = 12: it leaves the ground at t = 0 and lands back after 12 seconds

    −5t(t − 12) = 0
