Section A · multiple choice
- 1.
Two forces of 21 N and 24 N act at an angle of 60° to each other. The magnitude of their resultant is:
- 3 N
- 45 N
- 42 N
- 39 N
Answer
(d) 39 N
R² = A² + B² + 2AB cos θ
- 2.
A ball is projected at 50 m/s at 60° to the horizontal. Its horizontal range is: (Take g = 10 m/s².)
- 125√3 m
- 250 m
- 125 m
- 500 m
Answer
(a) 125√3 m
R = u² sin 2θ / g
- 3.
A body is projected at 20 m/s at 30° to the horizontal. Its time of flight is: (Take g = 10 m/s².)
- 4 s
- 1 s
- 2√3 s
- 2 s
Answer
(d) 2 s
T = 2u sin θ / g
Section B · short answer
- 4.
Two forces of 24 N and 32 N act at right angles. Find the magnitude of their resultant and the tangent of the angle it makes with the 24 N force.
Answer
40 N; tan α = 4/3
R = √(24² + 32²); tan α = 32/24
- 5.
A ball is thrown at 30 m/s at 45° to the horizontal. Find its time of flight, greatest height and horizontal range. (Take g = 10 m/s².)
Answer
T = 3√2 s; H = 22.5 m; R = 90 m
T = 2u sin θ/g; H = u² sin² θ/2g; R = u² sin 2θ/g
Section C · long answer
- 6.
Two balls are projected at 50 m/s, one at 30° and one at 60° to the horizontal. Find the range and greatest height of each. What do you notice? (Take g = 10 m/s².)
Answer
30°: R = 125√3 m, H = 31.25 m; 60°: R = 125√3 m, H = 93.75 m. The ranges are equal, but the 60° ball goes higher.
R = u² sin 2θ/g; H = u² sin² θ/2g
