Section A · multiple choice
- 1.
The pacemaker of the heart is the:
- bundle of His
- Purkinje fibres
- atrio-ventricular node
- sino-atrial node (SAN)
Answer
(d) sino-atrial node (SAN)
it starts each beat (70–75 times a minute)
- 2.
A heart beats 88 times a minute with a stroke volume of 65 mL. The cardiac output is:
- 5.72 L per minute
- 0.15 L per minute
- 57.2 L per minute
- 11.44 L per minute
Answer
(a) 5.72 L per minute
65 × 88 mL
- 3.
At 106 beats a minute, one cardiac cycle lasts about:
- 0.28 s
- 1.13 s
- 0.57 s
- 1.77 s
Answer
(c) 0.57 s
60 s ÷ 106
Section B · short answer
- 4.
What is double circulation?
Answer
Blood passes through the heart twice in one complete circuit: the pulmonary circulation (right ventricle → lungs → left atrium) and the systemic circulation (left ventricle → body → right atrium).
- 5.
A person’s cardiac output is 5.5 L per minute at 83 beats a minute. Find the stroke volume. (2 decimal places)
Answer
66.27 mL
5500 mL ÷ 83
Section C · long answer
- 6.
Describe the composition of blood.
Answer
Plasma (about 55%): about 90–92% water and 6–8% proteins (fibrinogen for clotting, globulins for defence, albumin for osmotic balance), plus glucose, amino acids, lipids, minerals and clotting factors. Formed elements (about 45%): red blood cells (5–5.5 million per mm³, with haemoglobin, living about 120 days), white blood cells (6000–8000 per mm³) and platelets (1.5–3.5 lakh per mm³, for clotting).
