Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

    Glycolysis takes place in the:

    1. inner mitochondrial membrane
    2. chloroplast
    3. mitochondrial matrix
    4. cytoplasm
    Answer

    (d) cytoplasm

  2. 2.

The net ATP gained from 4 molecules of glucose by fermentation is:

    1. 8
    2. 152
    3. 144
    4. 16
    Answer

    (a) 8

2 per glucose, from glycolysis only

  3. 3.

Where does the build-up of protons pumped by the electron transport system take place?

    1. The cytoplasm
    2. The mitochondrial matrix
    3. The inner mitochondrial membrane
    4. The inter-membrane space of the mitochondrion
    Answer

    (d) The inter-membrane space of the mitochondrion

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

What is the difference between aerobic respiration and fermentation?

    Answer

Aerobic respiration needs oxygen and breaks glucose completely to CO₂ and water, giving about 38 ATP. Fermentation happens without oxygen and breaks glucose only partly, to ethanol and CO₂ or lactic acid, giving only 2 ATP.

  2. 5.

How many ATP are made in the electron transport system from 13 NADH and 8 FADH₂?

    Answer

    55

    13 × 3 + 8 × 2

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

    Describe glycolysis.

    Answer

In the cytoplasm, glucose is phosphorylated using 2 ATP to fructose 1,6-bisphosphate, which splits into two triose phosphates (PGAL). Each is oxidised to 1,3-bisphosphoglycerate, reducing NAD⁺ to NADH; then ATP is made directly (substrate-level phosphorylation) twice per triose as it becomes pyruvic acid. Per glucose: 4 ATP made, 2 used, net 2 ATP, 2 NADH and 2 pyruvic acid.
