Section A · multiple choice
- 1.
The bond that joins two amino acids is a:
- phosphodiester bond
- ester bond
- glycosidic bond
- peptide bond
Answer
(d) peptide bond
- 2.
In a sample of double-stranded DNA, 38% of the bases are adenine. The percentage of guanine is:
- 12%
- 62%
- 38%
- 76%
Answer
(a) 12%
A = T = 38%; G = C = (100 − 76) ÷ 2 = 12%
- 3.
A protein made of 3 polypeptide chains has 153 amino acids in all. How many peptide bonds does it have?
- 153
- 154
- 152
- 150
Answer
(d) 150
each chain of k amino acids has k − 1 peptide bonds
Section B · short answer
- 4.
What is the difference between a nucleoside and a nucleotide?
Answer
A nucleoside is a nitrogenous base joined to a sugar (adenosine). A nucleotide also has a phosphate group (adenylic acid).
- 5.
A double-stranded DNA segment has 500 base pairs, and 15% of its bases are adenine. How many of each base does it have?
Answer
A 150, T 150, G 350, C 350
1,000 bases; A = T = 15%; G = C = 35%
Section C · long answer
- 6.
Describe the levels of structure of a protein.
Answer
Primary: the sequence of amino acids, from the N-terminal to the C-terminal. Secondary: the chain folds into a helix (mostly right-handed) or a sheet, held by hydrogen bonds. Tertiary: the helix folds on itself into a 3-D shape, which gives the protein its biological activity. Quaternary: several folded chains (subunits) arranged together, as in haemoglobin with two alpha and two beta subunits.
Fresh sheets for your child
In the app, every Biomolecules sheet is new: the app remembers the questions your child has already had and leaves them out. Print the sheet as a PDF, or use notebook mode and write the answers in a notebook.
