Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

The four basic types of animal tissue are epithelial, connective, muscular and:

    1. meristematic
    2. parenchyma
    3. vascular
    4. neural
    Answer

    (d) neural

  2. 2.

Which tissue is found in the ducts of glands and the tubular parts of nephrons?

    1. compound epithelium
    2. ciliated epithelium
    3. cuboidal epithelium
    4. columnar epithelium
    Answer

    (c) cuboidal epithelium

    secretion and absorption

  3. 3.

    The job of bone is:

    1. transporting substances round the body
    2. storing fat and insulating the body
    3. a supporting framework for epithelium
    4. support and protection; bone marrow makes blood cells
    Answer

    found in the skeleton

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

What is a tissue? Name the four basic types in animals.

    Answer

A group of similar cells, with the material between them, that together do a particular job. Epithelial, connective, muscle and neural tissue.

  2. 5.

Where is adipose tissue found, and what is its job?

    Answer

Beneath the skin; storing fat and insulating the body

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

Describe the types of simple epithelium with their locations and jobs.

    Answer

Squamous: a single layer of flat cells; walls of blood vessels and the air sacs of the lungs; diffusion. Cuboidal: cube-like cells; ducts of glands and the tubular parts of nephrons; secretion and absorption (with microvilli in the proximal tubule). Columnar: tall cells; lining of the stomach and intestine; secretion and absorption; ciliated columnar epithelium moves particles, as in the bronchioles and fallopian tubes.
