Section A · multiple choice

    1. adrenal
    2. pancreas
    3. thyroid
    4. pituitary
    Answer

    (d) pituitary

it controls many other glands; it is itself regulated by the hypothalamus

  2. 2.

    Oxytocin is secreted by the:

    1. atrial wall of the heart
    2. stomach wall
    3. posterior pituitary
    4. corpus luteum
    Answer

    (c) posterior pituitary

  3. 3.

The main function of testosterone is that it:

    1. prepares the body for "fight or flight"
    2. regulates the 24-hour (diurnal) rhythm of the body
    3. stimulates the adrenal cortex to make glucocorticoids
    4. controls male secondary sexual characters and spermatogenesis
    Answer

    (d) controls male secondary sexual characters and spermatogenesis

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

    What are hormones?

    Answer

Non-nutrient chemicals that act as intercellular messengers and are produced in trace amounts by endocrine glands or cells, travelling in the blood to act on target cells.

  2. 5.

Which gland secretes ACTH, and what does it do?

    Answer

The anterior pituitary; it stimulates the adrenal cortex to make glucocorticoids

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

Describe the hormones of the anterior pituitary and their functions.

    Answer

Growth hormone: growth (excess causes gigantism in children and acromegaly in adults; deficiency causes dwarfism). Prolactin: growth of mammary glands and milk formation. TSH: stimulates the thyroid. ACTH: stimulates the adrenal cortex to secrete glucocorticoids. LH and FSH (gonadotrophins): stimulate the gonads; in males LH stimulates androgen secretion and FSH with androgens regulates spermatogenesis; in females LH induces ovulation and maintains the corpus luteum, and FSH stimulates the growth of ovarian follicles. MSH (from the pars intermedia): pigmentation of the skin.
