Section A · multiple choice
- 1.
Keeping only the important details of a problem and ignoring the rest is:
- debugging
- looping
- decomposition
- abstraction
Answer
(d) abstraction
- 2.
A child faces East and turns 45° clockwise, then 45° clockwise, then 45° clockwise. Which way is the child facing now?
- South-East
- North-West
- South-West
- North-East
Answer
(c) South-West
net turn = 135° clockwise from East
- 3.
What is the smaller angle between the hour hand and the minute hand of a clock at 2:20?
- 80°
- 20°
- 60°
- 50°
Answer
(d) 50°
hour hand at 2 × 30° + 20 × 0.5° = 70°; minute hand at 20 × 6° = 120°; difference 50°
Section B · short answer
- 4.
What is abstraction? Give an example.
Answer
Keeping only the details needed and leaving out the rest, e.g. a metro map shows stations and lines, not every building.
- 5.
A child faces West and turns 90° clockwise, then 45° clockwise, then 90° clockwise. Which way is the child facing now?
Answer
South-East
net turn = 225° clockwise from West
Section C · long answer
- 6.
A child faces North. She turns 90° clockwise, then 180°, then 45° anticlockwise. (a) What single clockwise turn from North gives the same result? (b) Which way does she face? (c) Explain your method.
Answer
(a) 90 + 180 − 45 = 225° clockwise. (b) South-West. (c) Add the clockwise turns and take away the anticlockwise ones; then count 45° steps from North: North-East, East, South-East, South, South-West.
