Section A · multiple choice
- 1.
A compass needle placed near a wire moves when current flows because:
- the needle gets hot
- the wire is heavy
- the wire gets wet
- the current produces a magnetic field
Answer
(d) the current produces a magnetic field
Oersted, 1820
- 2.
An electromagnet is made with a plastic tube instead of an iron core. Compared with before, it becomes:
- weaker
- only hot, not magnetic
- non-magnetic even when on
- a permanent magnet
Answer
(a) weaker
- 3.
Which of these works mainly on the HEATING effect of current?
- a ceiling fan's motor
- an electric bell
- a kettle
- a compass needle near a wire
Answer
(c) a kettle
Section B · short answer
- 4.
What did Oersted discover?
Answer
An electric current produces a magnetic field (a compass needle moves near a current-carrying wire).
- 5.
Does the electromagnet become "stronger" or "weaker" with (a) more cells (b) the iron nail removed from inside the coil?
Answer
(a) stronger (b) weaker
Section C · long answer
- 6.
Describe how to make an electromagnet and test its strength.
Answer
Wind about 50 turns of insulated wire around an iron nail, connect the ends to a cell through a switch, and close the switch. Count how many paper clips it picks up. Try more turns or more cells and count again: more turns or current pick up more clips.
Fresh sheets for your child
In the app, every Electricity: Magnetic and Heating Effects sheet is new: the app remembers the questions your child has already had and leaves them out. Print the sheet as a PDF, or use notebook mode and write the answers in a notebook.
