Section A · multiple choice

  1. 1.

In salt water, the salt is the:

    1. solution
    2. mixture of gases
    3. solvent
    4. solute
    Answer

    (d) solute

  2. 2.

An object has a mass of 57 g and a volume of 19 cm³. What is its density?

    1. 3 g/cm³
    2. 1083 g/cm³
    3. 0.33 g/cm³
    4. 4 g/cm³
    Answer

    (a) 3 g/cm³

    57 ÷ 19 = 3

  3. 3.

An object has a density of 0.2 g/cm³. In water (density 1 g/cm³) it will:

    1. dissolve at once
    2. sink
    3. turn into a gas
    4. float
    Answer

    (d) float

    0.2 is less than 1

Section B · short answer

  1. 4.

What are a solute, a solvent and a solution?

    Answer

The solute dissolves in the solvent to make a uniform solution, like sugar (solute) in water (solvent).

  2. 5.

A brick piece has a mass of 75.6 g and a volume of 28 cm³. Find its density. Will it float or sink in water?

    Answer

    2.7 g/cm³; it will sink

    75.6 ÷ 28

Section C · long answer

  1. 6.

Describe an activity to show how temperature affects how much solid dissolves.

    Answer

Take the same amount of water at 20 °C, 50 °C and 70 °C. Add baking soda spoon by spoon to each, stirring, until no more dissolves. More dissolves in the hotter water, so solubility of solids increases with temperature.
